Qi Lan – Unique orchid fragrance from Wuyi Mountain
Qi Lan (奇蘭) is one of the main varieties of Wuyi rock tea, which belong to the type of “floral fragrance” in Wuyi rock tea, and Qi Lan, precisely translated as “unique orchid fragrance”, the nature of its unique fragrance of orchids well deserved its name. People who have just started drinking rock tea often don’t like the strong roasted fire flavor of the traditional Da Hong Pao and Rou Gui , while the elegant Qi Lan is deeply loved by impressing everyone with its fragrance.
According to the degree of roasting, rock tea can be divided into light fire, medium-light fire, medium fire, medium-full fire and full fire. Qi Lan is usually divided into medium roasting fire and light roasting fire. Instead of being strong like other Rock Tea, Qi Lan is relatively soft and sweet. The distinctive feature of Qilan is that it is elegant and high in aroma with bright honey and orchid fragrance.
Where is Qi Lan Rock Tea comes from?
The origin of Wuyi Qi Lan is the Qi Lan varietal from Southern Fujian (Min Nan Region). It is invented to Wuyi Mountain of Northern Fujian (Min Bei Region) in the 1990s. It started to be widely grown in Wuyi regions by then. With the unique making technique of Wuyi Rock Tea, it becomes a unique kinds of Rock Tea having both characteristics of Oolong Tea from Northern Fujian and Southern Fujian. It has high floral notes and sweetness which is similar to Bai Ya Qi Lan in southern Fujian. It also has apparent rock rhyme specially found in Wuyi Rock Tea.
This batch of Qi Lan is from Xing Cun town of Wuyi Mountain, It can be said that although Xing Cun Town belongs to the Ban Yan area of Wuyi Mountain, it has an excellent natural environment and has many organic ecological tea gardens. What’s more commendable is that the tea-making technology of Xing Cun Town is one of the most exquisite in the whole Wuyi Mountain, and can be called the leader of Wuyi Mountain craftsmanship.
How does it taste?
This Qi Lan adopts the traditional roasting process and it is light-medium roasted, resulting in high floral notes and lingering in sweetness, but also comes with a hint of mild and elegant charcoal aroma. When boiling water is poured, there will be an orchid-like aroma overflowing, just like the fragrance of orchids in the valley, and the aroma dissolves in water.
