Yunnan Zheng Mei Cha Steamed Green Tea
Yunnan Zheng Mei Cha 蒸酶茶, is a rare and unique steamed green tea originating from Gengma County in Lincang, Yunnan, located in southwest China near the border with Myanmar. While the region is best known for its Pu-erh tea production, locals also enjoy this distinctive steamed green tea, which is also a very common Yunnan’s tea-making traditions before the pu-erh tea production become popular.
The tea’s signature lies in its “steaming” green-killing process, where fresh leaves are treated with steam to halt enzymatic activity. This traditional method preserves the vibrant green color of the leaves, enhances the tea’s aromatic qualities, and reduces grassy notes. The steaming process requires careful control of technique and temperature, as these factors have a direct impact on the tea’s quality, flavor, and appearance.
This special steamed green tea delivers a bold and refreshing flavor. Its profile includes strong notes of green beans and seaweed, layered with a vegetal tone and a lingering sweetness. As it is made of the Yunnan large leaf variety, same as the variety to make the puerh tea, you can also find a hint of raw puerh fragrance in it.
