What can I learn from this 'Master Tasting Collection' #6 ?

“Aromatic” may be the first thing comes to your mind when talking about Feng Huang Dan Cong. There are actually hundreds of unique aroma/ fragrances among Feng Huang Dan Cong.  10 signatures  aroma is included in these two Master Tasting Boxes (Five Classic Phoenix Dan Cong Oolong Series One and Two). We choose these aroma because you’ll find the most distinctive characteristics among each of them. Each of them is having unique aroma, mouthfeel, dry leaves appearances,  liquor and varietal, etc. Taste-test each of the following aroma, and you can learn the differences of each “aroma”.

(1) ORANGE BLOSSOM AROMA “HUANG ZHI XIANG” PHOENIX DAN CONG OOLONG TEA

“Huang Zhi Xiang” means Yellow Branch/Sprig in Chinese, but it actually means “Orange Blossom Aroma”. Why it is called Yellow branch/ Sprig? Is the branches of this tea tree in yellow colour? It is originally being named as “Huang Ju Xiang”(黃橘香), “Huang Ju” means “Orange Blossom” , and it sound very like “Huang Zhi” (which means yellow sprig) when pronouncing in Chinese. People called it “Huang Zhi Xiang” (黃枝香)because it is easier to pronounce. It is especially special in its unique high floral notes of Orange Blossom/ Gardenia, and is well balance with the honey note. The aroma and sweetness is very long-lasting.

(2) BIG DARK LEAF “DA WU YE” PHOENIX DAN CONG OOLONG TEA

“Da Wu Ye” means big dark leaf in Chinese. Just like its name, Its fresh leaves is big and fat, and the colour is in dark green. It is one of the most common and classic Dan Cong in Chao Zhou. This Da Wu Ye taste a bit stronger and very higher in aroma when comparing with other Dan Cong. It also has notably orchid note. It is usually considered as the Daily drink and value to money options for the locals in Chao Zhou.

(3) ALMOND AROMA “XING REN XIANG” PHOENIX DAN CONG OOLONG TEA

“Ju Duo Zai” , also called Almond aroma. The name is “Ju Duo” means a jigsaw in Chinese. As of its name, Its leaves is small with jigsaw edge. This Dan Cong is having unique flavour. Apart from floral note, Ju Duo Zai is renowned of its nutty taste. It is a kind of Dan Cong with slightly higher taste and buttery in mouthfeel.

(4) “AO FU HOU” PHOENIX DAN CONG OOLONG TEA

The name “Ao Fu Hou” , also called “Ao Ku Hou”, which means “behind a dip in mountains”. The story about its name is because the mother tree of this “Ao Fu Hou” is growing in a big hole/dip behind a big stone. This mother tree is about 350 years old now. The production of this varietal is not that high comparing with other Dan Cong varietal. The tea is notably sweet, with complex floral notes.

(5) JASMINE AROMA “MO LI XIANG” PHOENIX DAN CONG OOLONG TEA

“Mo Li Xiang” means Jasmine Aroma. Its name does not mean that this tea is scented or include any Jasmine in it. This tea is not a very famous kind of Aroma among Dan Cong, but is definitely one of the most classic and aromatic Dan Cong. Its quite complicated to describe this “Mo Li Xiang” aroma, it is elegant, subtle, layered and long-lasting. If you like tea with subtle fragrance rather than prominently strong taste, this Jasmine Aroma is definitely a good option.
