2024 Autumn Jin Mao Hao Ying Hong No.9 Black Tea

Jin Mao Hao Ying Hong No.9 is a renowned premium variety of Ying Hong No.9 black tea, crafted from a single bud and one leaf. Its name, “Jin Mao Hao” 金毛毫 translates to “golden and downy pekoe, referencing the tea’s beautiful golden pekoe. The dry leaves are tightly twisted and fat, with a contrast of black and yellow colour, with lots of golden tips in between. This autumn batch is particularly aromatic, offering a sweet, mellow, and rich mouthfeel. It is full of floral and fruity notes, with subtle hints of chocolate and the characteristic pekoe flavor.

Yingde Black Tea Background

Yingde Black Tea, also known as Yingde Hong Cha, is one of the three most famous black teas in China, alongside Keemun and Dian Hong. Originating from Yingde City in Guangdong, it is a popular and highly regarded tea. There are multiple sub-varieties of Yingde Hong Cha, including “Huang Jin Gui,” “No.12,” “Jin Xuan,” and “Small Leaf,” with “Ying Hong No.9” being the most celebrated.

Ying Hong No.9, a specific cultivar of Yingde Hong Cha, was developed in the 1960s by the Guangdong Tea Research Institute from the Yunnan Big Leaf varietal. This tea became a significant export, especially to the UK and Europe, and was reportedly a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II, who served it at royal banquets. The large, twisted leaves of Ying Hong No.9 are dark brown with prominent golden pekoe. Its robust flavor is balanced by mellow fruity notes, with undertones of cocoa, caramel, and a delicate floral finish. Despite its bold character, the tea offers a complex and refined experience.
